Walk the path of a
Bestseller

With the eagerly awaited release of The Salt Path, the film adaptation of Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir, audiences will soon be immersed in a deeply moving story of resilience, love, and the healing power of nature. For guests at The Park Hotel, this tale is more than a cinematic experience, it’s a journey that begins just a short drive from our door.

The Salt Path chronicles the true story of Raynor and Moth Winn, a couple who, after losing their home and facing a devastating medical diagnosis, decide to walk the entire 630-mile South West Coast Path. What starts as an act of survival transforms into a powerful odyssey of self-discovery and connection with the land.

This iconic trail winds through some of the UK’s most extraordinary landscapes and cultural treasures, including one National Park, five National Landscapes, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Each step offers a new perspective, not only on nature, but on what it means to live fully.

Salt Path Stops Near Park Hotel

Lynton & Lynmouth and the Valley of Rocks (Approx. 50 mins)

Perched where Exmoor meets the sea, this dramatic coastline is etched with towering cliffs and unusual rock formations. The Valley of Rocks is particularly awe-inspiring, a place of haunting beauty that captures the spirit of endurance and solitude central to The Salt Path.

Clovelly (Approx. 35 mins)

This timeless fishing village, with its steep cobbled streets and sea views, feels like a step back in time. Raynor and Moth passed through Clovelly on their trek, and it remains one of the most atmospheric and characterful stops on the North Devon coast.

Hartland Quay (Approx. 50 mins)

Famous for its rugged cliffs and dramatic ocean views, Hartland Quay is one of the most striking sections of the coast path. It mirrors the physical and emotional challenges the couple faced on their walk, brutal beauty with moments of peace.

Combe Martin (Approx. 40 mins)

Nestled into a scenic bay, Combe Martin offers excellent coastal walking, with steep climbs and rewarding views. It’s an ideal stop for those wishing to taste the physical intensity of the path while staying within easy reach of comfort.

Woolacombe (Approx. 20 mins)

A sweeping sandy beach and golden dunes define this area, perfect for a refreshing day’s walk or a reflective pause by the sea, just as Raynor and Moth often did to reconnect with nature.

Braunton Burrows (Approx. 20 mins)

One of the largest sand dune systems in the UK, Braunton Burrows is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a haven for wildlife. Its shifting landscape and openness reflect the themes of resilience and renewal in The Salt Path.

Saunton Sands (Approx. 25 mins)

Wide, wild, and wonderful, Saunton Sands is a place to walk for miles with nothing but sea and sky ahead. It’s the kind of terrain that gave Raynor and Moth strength and a sense of freedom in their otherwise uncertain world.

Ilfracombe (Approx. 40 mins)

A mix of dramatic cliffs and harbour town charm, Ilfracombe is another stop that reflects the highs and lows of long-distance walking. Visit Damien Hirst’s “Verity,” grab a coffee in the harbour, or hike up to the Torrs for stunning views.
